Racial Divide…down in Jena!
September 20th, 2007by Enrique Cruz
Rocker David Bowie
gets brownie points from us for putting up some cash — (toward the legal fund) — to help ‘folks in need of a decent trial down in the racially divided city of Jena:
“There is clearly a separate and unequal judicial process going on in the town of Jena,” Bowie said. “A donation to the Jena Six Legal Defense Fund is my small gesture indicating my belief that a wrongful charge and sentence should be prevented.”

Hey Enrique,
Hope all is well. I did in fact hear about this incident awhile back but then it disappeared from the new’s radar. Funny how it reappeared as quickly as it disappeared when the news media found out how much it pissed people off and divided them. Nothing like a good story about racial divide in a country that has always had issues with race since way back when our presidents owned slaves. All that and a lot of time has passed but sadly all of the issues have not. Minorities still get the shit end of the stick when it comes to issues such as education, employment, housing and legal representation in the case of the Jena 6. Now, in clear and plain english the black kids under the tree shouldn’t have beat the shit out of the white kid for wanting to stand under the same tree with them. Obviously, their is a more serious, underlying and very large problem in this fucked up town called “Jena”. Sixteen year old teenage boys, particularly straight ones have been know to act on stupidity before. I am not excusing the “Jena 6″ for their actions, but when a town has a bunch of white kids running around hanging nooses around town has all the markings of a hate crime! No wonder with all the nooses and beatings nobody trusts one another in this town and not to mention, hanging nooses isn’t exactly juvenile vandalism. I would say that is equal to spraying swastikas around town and it is certainly meant to intimidate to say the least. A simple suspension is a slap on the wrist. The more I read about this the more disgusted I become. There is a clear injustice here, from the all white jury, to the african american Bush appointee declaring that there is nothing unjust regarding this case. Hearing things like this make me feel happy to know that there are diverse places to live like New York City and San Francisco. Sure these places have their fair share of problems, but when you hear fucked up things like what is happening in Jena you just know that wouldn’t happen in the Big Apple. There would be rioting and protesting in the street by all walks of life. Sadly, this situations just reeks of rioting. I hope that it does not lead to the Rodney King situation that I’m sure you remeber back in the nineties.
Anyway, my thoughts in writing. ~ED
